Kiama
(map)
is a
town and local government area 120 kilometres south of Sydney on the south coast of New South
Wale (population circa 20,000). The traditional landowners called the area
Kiarama;
the blowhole was referred to as Khanterinteree. The first European to explore the area was George Bass who stopped there on his
voyage to Bass Strait in the late 1700s. He noted the beauty and complexity of the Kiama area and was astounded when he first discovered the blowhole.
During colonisation Kiama was settled by farmers as the land was
rich and fertile. The Kendall family featured prominently
and Kendall descendants still live in the area. A number
of places are devoted to the family including Kendall Cemetery in Kiama Heights and Kendalls Beach.
The Council of the Municipality of Kiama incorporates the communities of Beachside, Bombo, Broughton Village,

Shoalhaven
(map)
is a local government
area two hours south of Sydney. It has two distinct
communities - the northern Nowra district; and the southern
Milton Ulladulla district. "In
1797 the area was crossed by the survivors of the wreck of the
Sydney Cove and then by explorer George Bass who,
investigating their reports, followed Seven Mile Beach,
crossed the shoals at the entrance to the Shoalhaven River and
noted the fertile river flats. He named the shallow mouth of
the Crookhaven River (as it is now known) 'Shoals
Haven'." (smh) NOTE:
excludes Jervis
Bay which, although is situated within the region, is a territory of the Commonwealth of Australia
administered by ACT.

Wingecarribee
(34°28′S 150°25′E;
map)
is a
local government area southwest of Sydney named after the Wingecarribee River, which flows through
the region. The pattern of development is one of small towns and villages. The eastern parts of the Shire are bounded by the Illawarra escarpment and Morton National Park, with some remnant rainforest and

there are three major storage dams - Avon, Nepean and Cordeaux. The Wollondilly and Wingecarribee Rivers flow through the west of the Shire, through deep sandstone valleys and much of this area forms part of the catchment for Warragamba Dam.
