General Information

Tumbarumba Main Street "The Parade" c 1920
"The Parade" Tumbarumba NSW c 1930
Tumbarumba is and aboriginal word meaning "Hollow Sounding Ground" and is situated in a valley at the foothills of the Snowy Mountains 507kms south of Sydney and 440kms north of Melbourne.
The first settlers arrived in Tumbarumba around 1836 after Hume and Hovell passed through the district in 1824. Mainly people looking for good grazing land for sheep and cattle.
Some of the first settlers to arrive were;

Brodribb, William Hutchison, Shelly Campbell, Murray and the Guise brothers.
Other early settlers were Osborne, Manton, Dutton, Hawdon, Rose and Manton.

Later settlers were Robert McMicking, and Thomas Mate. Some of the earlier grazing properties were Tooma, Maragle, Greg Greg, Welaregang, Burra, Willigobung, Mannus, Mundaroo, Coppabella, Wolseley Park, Carabost and Rosewood.
By the 1850's the town had been established and gold discoveries in the Tumbarumba district led to many families coming to the area.

Some of the miners that worked the area around Tumbarumba were Tom, George and Harry Bell, Joe, Jack and Ted Broadhurst, Brian and Tom Murphy, Bill and Bert Hartnett, G Kellam, Charlie and Bob Wood, Dave Booth, Dick Curry, Jack, Fred and Ted Tonkin, George and Jack Rutherford Tim McAuliffe, Bill and Alf Lucas.
Licensee's for some of the hotels were, Stephen Daly, Robert Watson, John Murphy, George Draws, Mary Broadhurst, William Norman, William Henry and August Langeschmeidt
Sawmilling commenced in the 1880-1890's by the Hides, Hussell and Gaylard families. Other mills were Kopsen's Mill at Laurel Hill started operating in 1910. In 1917 George Brown owned a mill at Bago.

A Gross Scandal
"Sir, you must have noticed at Mr H Levin's funeral on Monday after the disgraceful use to which our cemetery is being appliced. Is there no way or law for punishing people who put their cattle into such sacred ground as a cemetery. - An answer will oblige".

Simpson Mr died at his daughter's residence, Mrs W Whitehead, after spreading butter on his bread which had been mixed with strychnine for the purposes of killing mice. He was aged 90 years and died several hours later. Tumberumba Times 7.4.1911.
Smith Mrs Roderick of Rosewood, youngest daughter of the late John Doughty of Torrington Glenroy died aged 41 years from measles and pneumonia. Early last week a child was born. Gold Discovery. A rich reef has been discovered about 20 miles from Tumberumba on Bringenbong Station. No stone, it is reported assayed 50 ozs to the ton. the main reef which was struck yesterday is said to be a mass of gold. Yass Courier 21.7.1896.
Goldfield New goldfield about 30 sq miles, parish of Courabyra, County of Wynyard, have been proclaimed as a western extension of the Tumberumba Goldfield. Yass Courier 2.8.1878.
Gold Laurel Hill. Mining matters are somewhat quite in this locality. Woods and party started to panel last week. Timmis and party are still driving, they are trying to cut the lead of gold they had in the old tunnel. The Adelong party are still trying to repair their old drive.

Before Mr Makinson PM, Constable Weifert introduced on the 27.7.1884 Wm Hill, a gentleman noticed with for strong "spiritualistic tendencies" and a flow of language far more forcible than polite.
