Christ Church Cathedral Headstone Transcriptions & Burials
copied from: Christ Church Cathedral, Headstone Transcriptions (archive.org)
This cemetery, the earliest major burial ground in Newcastle, was desecrated in the 1970's with most of the headstones removed and used for filling. The remaining headstones were placed in three rows along the eastern boundary. The cemetery was originally a general cemetery with Roman Catholic, Presbyterian and Wesleyan Methodist burials taking place there until they had their own burial grounds.
Honeysuckle Point Cemetery began burials for the Roman Catholics and Presbyterians in the 1840's, a cemetery at Wickham began burials for Wesleyan Methodists at the same time. Both these cemeteries were used until Sandgate Cemetery began operating in 1881. (Source: N.M.H. March, 1902)
These listings were compiled by me from
- Headstones remaining at the back of Christ Church Cathedral as at the 12th July, 1998.
- Articles in the the Newcastle Morning Herald 1887 (under the title 'God's Acre') and 1902. I have included the dates in which the transcriptions were printed, as most had a lot of family background included, well worth a read.
- Miscellaneous
Area: N/A
Burials began: 1802, ceased in 1881 when Sandgate Cemetery was opened.
