Honeysuckle Point Cemetery, Newcastle
(also known as Cottage Creek and West End Cemetery)
copied from: Honeysuckle (Cottage Creek) Cemetery, Newcastle, NSW, Australia (archive.org)
Honeysuckle Point Cemetery began as a burial ground for Presbyterians and Roman Catholics in the 1840's and continued until Sandgate Cemetery began operating in 1881, before this Presbyterians and Roman Catholics buried their dead in the Christ Church Cathedral Cemetery which was at that time a general cemetery. During the 1840's the Wesleyan Methodists also began operating their own cemetery at Wickham.
The names listed below were exhumed from the Honeysuckle Cemetery in 1916 and buried in the Presbyterian section of Sandgate, burials also took place in the Catholic section of the cemetery. An estimated 300 burials took place at the cemetery according to the Newcastle Morning Herald 2.10.1916.
Contributions of burial details are of those buried at the original Honeysuckle Cemetery and it is not known if they were transferred to Sandgate Cemetery.
3/10/2002 Update - A few months ago I photographed all the Presbyterian Headstones from Honeysuckle and when I examined them closely, found errors in the information given on the fiche which I had posted on the original Honeysuckle webpage. The information below, is from the actual headstone, no icon? the headstone is probably there but badly weathered and unreadable.
I also found the old Catholic Honeysuckle graves, there would be about 20 of them, most of the headstones in this section are in a far worse state than the Presbyterian ones, there is no record of the Catholic exhumations on the Sandgate fiche. The transcriptions I was able to read are now listed below.
