The following is a precis of an announcement appearing in the Hobarton Mercury of 28 October, 1854, p3 and signed by members of the Hobart Jewish community. To the Honorable the Legislative Council of Van Dieman'e Land, in Council Assembled, by the Jewish Community. It states that the best estimate is that there are 620 Jewish persons in Van Dieman's Land at this date. At their own expense, the community has erected synagogues in Hobart Town and Launceston. It asks for a share of the money ( 10000 pounds ) allocated annually for the maintenance of public worship and presently shared by the Church of England, the Church of Scotland, the Church of Rome and the Wesleyan Methodists.
